SOMERSET LITERACY NETWORK POETRY COMPETITION
We have had major success in this year's Somerset Literacy Competition. There were over 1300 entries from schools all over Somerset. This year's theme was trees and the standard was apparently particularly high. The overall Upper Key Stage 2 winner was Robert in Year 6. Highly commended was Paddy (Year 5) and Commended were entries by Hollie, Vinny and Seann. Two of our Year 5 pupils - Layla and Robin - were shortlisted in the competition. Prize winners have been invited to a Poetry Slam in July which is to be held at Dillington House, where they will meet the published poet, Rachel Rooney, and be awarded with their certificates.
EXTREME READING CHALLENGE
Thank you to those children who entered our Extreme Reading Competition which raised funds towards our Reading Diet book collections for each year group. The prize-winner was Lewis in Catkins class - congratulations!
POETRY SLAM 2016
On 14 June, two of our Year 6 children attended this year's Poetry Slam at Dillington Hall. Jacob Partridge, the Key Stage 2 winner of the Somerset Literacy Network poetry competition with his poem entitled 'The Barn Owl', was awarded his prizes (a framed copy of his poem and a poetry book), and was given the opportunity to read his poem to an audience. Ben Martin, whose poem was highly commended in the competition, also attended the event. The afternoon consisted of an excellent poetry workshop and several performances of well-known poems. It was a highly inspirational afternoon.
